Knoxville’s Waterfront Music Festival: Second Bell Music Fest 2019
By: Julie Brett
Knoxville, Tennessee is home to a highly creative and vibrant music scene. The Second Bell Music Fest displays this diverse talent with a sampling of music, restaurants, retailers, and comedians for one day of discovery and entertainment in a waterfront setting. With a relatively low cost, concertgoers can sample the scene in a picturesque outdoor venue without breaking the bank.
The second annual Second Bell Music Fest was born out of the roots of BLANK newspaper’s BLANKFest with a goal of creating an event similar to BLANKFest with a waterfront setting. The event will be held on August 17, 2019 at Suttree Landing Park in Knoxville, Tennessee. The fest will showcase retailers, music, comedians, food, and fashion. Rusty Odom, Publisher of Blank Magazine shared his thoughts on the festival’s mission:
“With such a crowded festival landscape, we’ve realized that our niche is introducing our neighbors to a new favorite band or three, whether it be one of Knoxville’s incredible local acts or a nationally touring act. Our plan from the beginning has been to expose folks to bands that will spring in the future and infiltrate their playlists for years to come.”
With such an incredible music scene, Knoxville sets the perfect stage for this type of festival. Attendees will find up and coming bands, such as last year’s Repeat Repeat, and the goal is that a new discovery will be made by everyone there. Rusty elaborates on how the lineup sometimes comes together, and what inspires the festival and those who work so hard to organize it:
“I’m also very aware that this festival wouldn’t happen without BLANK Newspaper and the sprawling family that we’ve obtained over our 12 years of existence. Most of the volunteers and staff members for Second Bell are also writers, editors and designers for the paper. It’s a family affair. In fact, The LiL iFFY reunion came about three days ago when iFFy himself sent me a story previewing the Tennessee Vols Football team. He’s not only a brilliant musician, he’s BLANK’s Sports Editor, and after sending me his expose on the Vols, he mentioned that LiL iFFY had recorded new songs in secret. Three days later, we’re announcing him on the lineup and it’s all anyone wants to talk to me about. It’s a great time to be alive in Knoxville. This city is on fire with creativity and we’re just getting started.”
Second Bell is an all ages event, but an ID is required for alcohol. There will be shuttles provided from designated areas and a safe space for cyclists. No pets are allowed in this event, as well as tools, cameras with detachable lenses, glass of any kind, chairs, and any weapons. Also prohibited are illegal substances, drones, and fireworks. As a rain or shine event, no refunds will be given.
