Stop and Stopover – Savannah Stopover 2019

Stop what you’re doing- Savannah Stopover kicks off today in its namesake town of Savannah, GA. This ever-growing festival is a key milestone into Spring in the south, created as a companion of sorts to the notorious and upcoming South By Southwest Festival in Austin TX. Like SXSW, Savannah Stopover has grown exponentially, and this year’s offering is as good as ever.

The ninth installment of Stopover will feature artists like Deerhunter and The Joy Formidable, with rising regional acts Lucy Dacus, Surfer Blood, The Artisanals, and Susto. Plenty of other performances to be seen, with close to 80 acts over the weekend. Also included are local Savannah acts Jeff Two-Name and the Born Agains, Dope Knife, and Heavy Books.
Saturday afternoon will see a ‘GenNext’ showcase of local Savannah middle and high school artists, like Chris Jenkins, Pig Teeth, and Chopped Eclipse. Finally, additional showcases include “Stopover in the Yard,” focusing on Country and Americana artists, and the Kanine Records Label Showcase, featuring touring indie rock acts.

With veteran-owned Service Brewing Company as a major sponsor, community sponsors like Perc Coffee, and notable venues like Barrelhouse South, Congress Street Social Club, and El Rocko Lounge, this festival does well to open the city up to new visitors. There’s even a user-friendly, GPS-enabled app, so you won’t miss out on that set three venues down before it starts!  Passes are still available, ranging from single day to VIP 3-day passes. If you’re planning on taking the whole family, note that some events are all ages, but not all, so make sure to check each show you plan to attend.

Thursday’s kickoff event, sponsored by Do Savannah, takes place at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, and features Lucy Dacus, Sontalk, and Aaron Paul Zimmer. Food will be offered from Bow Tie BBQ and Yoshi’s Kitchen food trucks. This opening night event will be a great all-ages celebration of the weekend as a whole. Opening night festivities start at 6pm (5:30 doors).

Make your way to the festival for one day, or the full weekend if you’re in the area. Even if you’re too far away, this lineup is one to scope for your next favorite band, and you can always mark the calendar for Savannah Stopover 2020!
